“This is really hard right now”

I heard that phrase bubble like cheap champagne out of someone’s mouth and I wanted to launch myself through the glass of my clear, clean condo windows and down onto the bitch, Predator style and, at the very least, ruin her golf outfit forever. 

I sat there, mentally fuming. I played it over in my minds eye again and again. That insipid statement “This is really hard right now”. I got increasingly more irritated, and less reasonable. THIS AIN’T HARD BITCH. And then for real fun, I mentally wrestled with myself over the truthiness of what ‘really hard’ was and arrived at “I don’t fucking know!” cul de sac.

I’m in the midst of some kind of incredible, awesome, co-created misery spiral. I’m sure it all has an end (I’m not at all sure of this), but only because I’m an eternal optimist (when I’m not a pessimist). Some, who have known me, might argue that this is par for the course, my course; This melancholy, this buckle, is all very droll and very boring in the context of ‘me’, to wit an unspoken: “We expected this of you”. And I would tell Some to fuck the shit off and shut the fuck up. And also you don’t know me!

Is this the middle age meltdown I swore I’d never go through or is it simply the recognition that everything is fucking irritating and it’s been that way all my life; That I’ve been stupidly climbing the signposts that others, with the benefit of impersonal distance, have been reading? Or maybe is it that I’ve spent my life dumbing myself down for people who didn’t even deserve the effort, and more pointedly, the consequence of it and now I’m fucking pissed. Maybe both? Maybe I just need a nice cuppa.

And let me be clear, when I say dumbing down, I don’t mean refusing to discuss science and architecture and art or politics in polite (or resoundingly monsterous) groups of people, because that is fucking easy. Anyone can do that shit. Anyone is capable of forming an opinion and flapping their gums. I mean pretending to like things out of politeness, creating pretense that things are amusing because what harm could that possibly do. Letting the ‘small’ things slide because who cares? Benefit. Of. The. Fucking. Doubt. Benefit of the doubt when you ought not to, when you feel the better of it, when you think you probably shouldn’t, when you sense that it isn’t warranted. That Benefit of the Doubt you give 99 times out of 100. That is the 5000 paper cuts that will bleed you to death.

If you spend your lifetime giving your benefit of the doubt, gracious as can be, you will absolutely come up on 40 and have no benefit and no doubt left to offer. Anyone. Because you gave it all away to people who didn’t deserve it. And that wound festers, friend. It festers like a forgotten bedsore, and soon enough you’re 80 years old and yelling at kids to get off your lawn. And not in the cool/crazy HST way.

Where was I going with this?

Oh right. 

Shit that is hard. Things that classify as difficult. 

I don’t know what those things are, objectively. All I know is that you need to watch what you say. If you have any concern for your 80 year old self you will fucking watch what you say. To your friends, to employers, to strangers and most definitely to yourself. Also, save that benefit of doubt for the ones who truly deserve it. It may be a cliche internet meme but that fuck pool is absolutely finite. It would be a shame to find it dry and empty when you need it the most.
